Survey Finds UK Drivers Intend to Keep Petrol and Diesel Cars for Nine Years on Average

The findings underline a policy gap as ZEV sales targets tighten, with projections still showing tens of millions of combustion cars on the road.

Overview

  • Fuel firm Sustain surveyed 1,300 petrol and diesel drivers and found an average planned ownership period of nine years.
  • Only 27% of respondents expect to switch to electric within five years, while 5% plan to keep combustion cars for two decades.
  • Sustain’s David Richardson projects roughly 23 million fossil-fuelled cars could still be in use by 2030 even if 80% of new sales are electric.
  • The UK’s ZEV mandate requires 28% of new-car sales to be electric by year-end, rising toward 80% by 2030, with fines up to about £12,000 per non-compliant vehicle and a credit-trading system.
  • Industry data show EVs accounted for 21.3% of July new-car registrations, and Sustain is urging support for sustainable fuels to cut emissions from the existing fleet.
