Survey Finds Heavy AI Use by UK Pupils, Low Trust in Its Accuracy

Nearly half of students seek teacher guidance on when to trust AI.

  • An Opinium survey of 2,000 UK pupils aged 13 to 18 for Oxford University Press reports that about eight in ten use AI for schoolwork.
  • Only 47% feel confident judging AI-generated information, while 32% say they cannot tell whether AI content is true.
  • Forty-eight percent want teachers to help them decide when AI outputs are trustworthy, and about a third believe their teachers are not confident using AI tools.
  • Nearly half worry teachers cannot detect classmates' undisclosed AI use, and 62% say AI has negatively affected their schoolwork skills, including making tasks too easy or limiting creativity.
  • The Department for Education has issued guidance and OUP is launching an AI education hub, with London pupils reporting the highest usage and confidence levels.
