Survey Finds Half of UK Adults Living With Parents Are Fed Up

Fewer than one in ten can afford an average first-time buyer home locally.

Overview

  • A OnePoll survey of 2,000 adults living with their parents reports that 50% are frustrated with their situation and 90% still hope to move out.
  • Among those who are fed up, 36% say they have lost their independence, and 29% find it hard to maintain relationships while living at home.
  • Affordability remains the core barrier, with under 10% able to buy the average first-time buyer property locally and under 1.5% in London, the East of England and the Southwest.
  • Saving for a deposit is progressing slowly, as 82% of savers say they are still a long way off and the average amount put aside is just over £11,500.
  • The ‘boomerang generation’ is sizable at 29%, and nearly half of those who returned home have stayed longer than planned, with a third feeling they have overstayed.
