Survey: 34% of German Internet Users Saw Hate Speech, 54% Saw Fake News in Q1 2025

The official EU‑harmonized household poll records self‑reported online experiences from people aged 16 to 74.

34 Prozent der Internetnutzer in Deutschland haben im ersten Quartal 2025 Hassrede in Sozialen Medien oder auf Webseiten wahrgenommen. Damit waren 19,6 Millionen Menschen zwischen 16 und 74 Jahren mit sogenannter Hatespeech im Internet konfrontiert.

  • Destatis reported that the share perceiving hate speech rose to 34% in Q1 2025 from 28% in 2023, equating to about 19.6 million users.
  • Perceived disinformation reached 54%, or roughly 31.2 million people, an increase of six percentage points compared with 2023.
  • Younger users reported higher exposure, with 43% of those aged 16–44 noticing hate speech versus 27% of 45–64s and 20% of 65–74s.
  • Political or societal opinions were the most cited target at 85%, followed by ethnicity or racist remarks (62%), sexual orientation (53%), religion or belief (52%), gender (39%) and disability (25%).
  • Findings come from Germany’s IKT household survey using EU definitions, covering internet users aged 16–74 in a population where about 95% in that range were online in Q1 2025.
