Surrey Police Service Officially Takes Over Policing from RCMP
The transition marks the largest policing shift in Canadian history, following years of political and legal battles.
- The Surrey Police Service (SPS) officially assumed police jurisdiction at midnight, replacing the RCMP after 73 years of service in Surrey, British Columbia.
- The transition, initiated in 2018, has been described as the largest of its kind in Canada and is expected to be fully completed by 2027.
- SPS currently oversees two of Surrey's six policing districts, with additional districts to be transferred as more officers are hired to meet the required staffing of 785 officers.
- The provincial government committed $250 million in funding over the next decade to support the transition, including covering salary differences between SPS and RCMP officers if needed.
- Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke, who opposed the transition, pledged her support for the SPS, while RCMP officers will continue to assist during the multi-year handover process.
