Surjit Singh Jailed for Life With 15-Year Minimum for Killing His Mother After TV Remote Dispute

The judge cited a sustained intoxicated assault triggered by a dispute over a TV remote.

Overview

  • Singh, 39, was sentenced on September 12 at Birmingham Crown Court to life imprisonment with a 15-year minimum term after a guilty plea.
  • Mohinder Kaur, 76, was chased through their Handsworth home and repeatedly kicked and stamped on, then died in hospital later that day of blunt force trauma.
  • He had been his mother's sole carer, with earlier reports of family strain including a 2023 NHS 111 call in which he admitted pulling her hair and said he was struggling with his mental health.
  • Toxicology showed alcohol and cocaine in his system, with the court told he had consumed about 700ml of whiskey, 8–10 beers and two grams of cocaine in the preceding 24 hours.
  • After the assault he phoned a relative, prompting a 999 call and police forced entry; he later returned, was arrested at the scene, and told officers, “I didn’t mean to do it. I just lost my head.”
