Overview
- The analysis examined 222 MPTS cases from August 2023 to August 2024 and identified 55 hearings involving sexual misconduct, including rape, sexual assault, harassment and offences against children.
- In 11 proven sexual misconduct cases where the GMC sought erasure, tribunals imposed suspensions instead, and nearly a quarter of those found guilty were allowed to return to practice after a suspension.
- All doctors identified in the sexual misconduct sample were male, with about four in five holding positions of authority over colleagues or patients.
- The GMC says it takes a zero‑tolerance approach and has appealed decisions it views as too lenient, with a significant share of appeals leading to tougher sanctions, including High Court interventions in specific cases.
- The MPTS says it aims to ensure fair, impartial hearings and will soon publish comprehensive guidance intended to help panels deliver more consistent, well‑reasoned decisions.
