Overview

  • A 40-year-old Mumbai resident, Meena Raoji Solanki, arrived at St George’s Hospital weighing just 20 kg due to a 10.4 kg ovarian tumour that displaced her liver, spleen and intestines.
  • A multidisciplinary team led by Dr Rajshree Katke performed a high-risk four-hour surgery involving oncologists, gynaecologists and anaesthetists to remove the mass.
  • Postoperative care included ICU monitoring followed by a high-protein diet that is helping Solanki rebuild strength and mobility.
  • In Pune, surgeons at Jehangir Hospital excised an 18 kg borderline mucinous cystadenoma from a 68-year-old woman who was discharged 10 days later after her weight dropped from 116 kg to 96 kg.
  • Both cases highlight how timely surgical intervention and coordinated postoperative rehabilitation can overcome life-threatening complications from delayed treatment.
