Overview

  • Footage and eyewitnesses reported the attack about 7:30 a.m. Monday at Cabarita/Norries Headland, where a shark bit through Brad Ross’s board and launched him into the water without injuring him.
  • Lifeguards closed Cabarita Beach and nearby Norries Cove, posted warnings, and deployed UAVs to monitor the area with support from Surf Life Saving NSW and police.
  • A SMART drumline hooked a 4–5 metre white shark near Norries Headland around 9:52 a.m.; the shark was released before tagging, and DPIRD biologists said the board damage was most likely from a great white.
  • Beaches near Cabarita reopened on Tuesday under continued surveillance, with ongoing drone patrols after further sightings were reported later on Monday.
  • The close call follows a serious June bite on a 16-year-old at the same spot, and Tweed Shire Mayor Chris Cherry is seeking state funding to run more drone patrols outside school holiday periods.
