Surfer Killed in Shark Encounter off Maui's Coast

The 39-year-old victim from Haiku, Hawaii, was the only fatality from a shark encounter in the state in 2023.

A 39-year-old man from Haiku, Hawaii, was killed in a shark encounter while surfing off the coast of Maui.
The man was brought to shore by rescuers and received life-saving measures before being transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he later died.
Shark warning signs were posted on beaches one mile on either side of Paia Bay, where the incident occurred.
This was the only fatal shark encounter reported in Hawaii in 2023.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing and an autopsy is scheduled.
