Supreme Court Upholds Suspended Prison Term and Fine for Yoo Ah-in

Overview

  • On July 3, the Supreme Court’s first division affirmed a one-year prison sentence suspended for two years and imposed a 2 million won fine on the 39-year-old actor.
  • Prosecutors had convicted Yoo under the Narcotics Control Act for habitual drug abuse, including illegal use of propofol and marijuana and for encouraging others to use the drug.
  • Evidence showed he received about 9.6 liters of propofol and other sedatives across roughly 181 clinic visits in Seoul between September 2020 and March 2022.
  • He also obtained approximately 1,100 sleeping pills under other people’s names on 44 occasions from May 2021 to August 2023.
  • Investigators reported that Yoo traveled to the United States in January 2024 with an acquaintance and smoked marijuana there while allegedly encouraging its use by others.
