Colonel Pushpinder Singh Bath and his son were allegedly assaulted by Punjab cops outside an eatery in Patiala in March this year.
The Supreme Court was initially inclined to impose a heavy cost of ₹10 lakh on the policemen while dismissing their petition. However, the court refrained from imposing the penalty as it dismissed their petitions.

Overview

  • A bench of Justices Sanjay Kumar and Satish Chandra Sharma dismissed the officers’ plea and warned of heavy costs for challenging the probe transfer.
  • The court condemned accused Punjab police personnel for violating military respect, noting citizens “sleep peacefully” because soldiers serve at the border.
  • Criticism mounted after the Chandigarh SIT failed to make any arrests or issue warrants nearly four months after the FIR was registered.
  • Colonel Pushpinder Singh Bath has accused 12 officers of assaulting him and his son, seizing his ID and phone, and threatening a false encounter at a Patiala dhaba.
  • With the appeal rejected, the CBI is now empowered to lead the criminal investigation, though no officers have yet been detained.
