Supreme Court Triggers Return of Pregnant Sunali Khatun and Son From Bangladesh

Four others deported with them remain in Bangladesh despite court orders.

Overview

  • Sunali Khatun and her eight-year-old son re-entered India through the Mahadipur border in Malda on December 5 after the Centre told the Supreme Court it would repatriate them on humanitarian grounds.
  • Border formalities were completed by the BSF and BGB before Indian officials received the duo, who were then taken to Malda Medical College for checks due to her advanced pregnancy.
  • Doctors kept her under observation citing a low blood count, and she later reached her village in Birbhum before being admitted to Rampurhat Medical College for further care.
  • The Calcutta High Court had on September 26 set aside the June pushbacks as illegal and ordered the return of all six, while the Supreme Court this week criticized deportations without due process and cited documents such as 1952 land deeds, 2002 electoral rolls, Aadhaar, PAN and birth certificates.
  • Four others, including Khatun’s husband and members of another Birbhum family, remain in Bangladesh after receiving bail on December 1 from a Chapai Nawabganj court, with their repatriation pending.
