Supreme Court to Hear Vodafone Idea's AGR Dues Challenge on Sept. 19

Government signals no new AGR relief, heightening funding pressure on the debt-laden carrier.

Overview

  • Vodafone Idea filed a Sept. 8 petition seeking to quash additional AGR demands and to have dues up to FY16-17 comprehensively reconciled under Feb. 3, 2020 deduction verification guidelines.
  • The company disputes about Rs 9,450 crore in fresh claims, including a new Rs 2,774 crore demand for FY18-19 and revised figures for FY17 and FY19.
  • The hearing comes after earlier Supreme Court orders that upheld a broad AGR definition and allowed a 10-year payment schedule while rejecting reassessments.
  • The Ministry of State for Telecom has said the Department of Telecommunications is not contemplating AGR relief for Vodafone Idea.
  • Vodafone Idea shares rose to a four-month high on heavy volumes ahead of the court date.
