Overview
- The Supreme Court has listed Telangana’s writ petition (WP No. 1258 of 2025) for January 5 before the Chief Justice, seeking to restrain Andhra Pradesh from proceeding with the Polavaram–Banakacharla/Nallamala Sagar link.
- At issue is Andhra Pradesh’s plan to move up to 200 tmc ft of Godavari floodwaters via Polavaram, first framed as the Banakacharla link and later recast toward Nallamala Sagar after objections over Krishna-basin diversion.
- Telangana says it pressed central agencies through multiple letters, secured the MoEF&CC Expert Appraisal Committee’s June 30 return of AP’s proposal on inter-state grounds, and asked the court to halt DPR work, clearances and capacity expansions.
- The state government disputes BRS claims that the CWC approved 200 tmc ft diversion on July 31, asserting the Union Jal Shakti Ministry withheld permissions and that no in-principle consent for a DPR had been granted as of December 4.
- The political confrontation has sharpened as BRS demands an Assembly presentation and attacks a December 23 technical committee led by Adityanath Das, while the Congress prepares a detailed briefing to counter the allegations.
