Overview

  • On May 22, a Supreme Court bench directed Karnataka to issue TDR certificates worth ₹3,011 crore for 15 acres of Bangalore Palace Grounds in contempt proceedings.
  • The certificates were handed over to the royal heirs on May 23 before the state moved the court to challenge the order.
  • Karnataka contends that Section 14B of the 2004 Town and Country Planning Act cannot be applied retrospectively to a 1996 land acquisition under the Bangalore Palace Act.
  • State counsel highlighted that the original Act fixed compensation at ₹11 crore for the disputed land prior to the introduction of the TDR mechanism.
  • The Supreme Court has set the hearing for May 27 to decide whether a coordinate bench’s order can be revisited through the government’s plea.
