Overview
- A two-judge bench led by Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan granted an interim stay of the Madras High Court’s June 3 order on June 9.
- The Madras High Court had barred the National Highways Authority of India from collecting tolls over allegations of inadequate road maintenance and incomplete plantation work.
- The NHAI told the Supreme Court that the highway serves more than 25,000 daily users and that toll revenue is needed for upkeep.
- Petitioner V Balakrishnan argued that the contractor failed to maintain the highway stretch and partly planted saplings as required under the 2006 contract.
- The Supreme Court has issued notice to Balakrishnan and will hold a detailed hearing on the authority’s Special Leave Petition.
