Supreme Court Sets Sept. 26 Hearing on Vodafone Idea’s Fresh AGR Challenge

The government, now a major shareholder, sought time to explore a resolution.

Overview

  • Chief Justice B. R. Gavai’s bench said there must be finality to the long‑running AGR proceedings and listed the case for next week.
  • Solicitor General Tushar Mehta noted the Centre holds about 49% in Vodafone Idea and did not oppose the plea, asking for time to work out a solution.
  • Vodafone Idea is contesting roughly ₹9,450 crore in additional demands, arguing much of it was crystallised by earlier Supreme Court rulings and seeking a reconciliation under the February 3, 2020 Deduction Verification Guidelines.
  • The Department of Telecommunications maintains the amounts reflect gaps outside the 2019 judgment’s scope and insists they are payable.
  • Vodafone Idea shares jumped up to 12.35% after the court agreed to hear the petition, even as the broader market fell.
