Supreme Court Sets Sept. 1 Hearing on Bihar Voter Roll Extension

The court will weigh prolonging the claims window after a late surge in Aadhaar-enabled online submissions.

Overview

  • Election Commission data show about 2.12 lakh individual claims filed by Aug. 29, while political parties submitted just 117, including 108 by CPI(ML) and nine by RJD.
  • The Commission reported no formal claims or objections from any recognised national party, despite deploying large numbers of booth-level agents.
  • Roughly 3 lakh people received notices to appear over document discrepancies in border districts such as East and West Champaran, Madhubani, Kishanganj, Purnia, Katihar, Araria and Supaul, according to ECI sources.
  • Applications accelerated after the Supreme Court’s Aug. 22 order allowing online filing and acceptance of Aadhaar or other listed documents for inclusion requests.
  • The draft roll lists 7.24 crore electors after about 65 lakh deletions, and officials say no draft-name can be removed without an enquiry, a speaking order and fair opportunity, with final rolls due Sept. 30.
