Supreme Court Seeks Responses on Sonam Wangchuk’s NSA Detention, Sets Oct. 14 Hearing

The bench asked authorities to consider providing his wife the grounds for the detention.

Overview

  • A bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N. V. Anjaria issued notices to the Centre, the Ladakh administration, and Jodhpur Central Jail on a habeas corpus plea filed by Gitanjali J. Angmo.
  • The court declined urgent relief and listed the matter for October 14, also recording that medical care for Wangchuk will be ensured as per prison rules.
  • Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said legal procedures were followed and the grounds of detention were served on Wangchuk, as the bench queried whether a copy could be given to his wife.
  • Angmo’s petition calls the detention illegal and unconstitutional, alleges she is under virtual house arrest and HIAL staff are being harassed, and seeks access to her husband and quashing of the order.
  • Wangchuk, detained on September 26 after violent Leh protests on September 24 that left four dead, has from jail urged a judicial inquiry into the killings and appealed for a peaceful, non-violent movement; the government has also cancelled an NGO’s FCRA linked to him.
