Supreme Court Seeks Government Response on Sonam Wangchuk’s NSA Detention, Sets Oct. 14 Hearing

The bench set a fast hearing schedule to examine claims of arbitrary NSA use after deadly Leh unrest.

Overview

  • Justices Aravind Kumar and N. V. Anjaria issued notice to the Centre, the Ladakh administration and Jodhpur Central Jail on the habeas corpus petition filed by Gitanjali J. Angmo.
  • The court recorded that the grounds of detention have been supplied to Wangchuk and asked the government to examine giving a copy to his wife, with no immediate order on that request.
  • The bench noted he should receive medical attention as required under prison rules, after the Solicitor General said Wangchuk reported no current medication and the wife’s counsel sought interim relief.
  • Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act on September 26 following Leh clashes on September 24 that left four dead and many injured, and he remains lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail.
  • Authorities allege his speeches incited violence, while the petition calls the detention illegal and flags wider actions against his networks, including the reported cancellation of SECMOL’s FCRA licence.
