Supreme Court Seeks EC, Centre Replies on Tamil Nadu Voter Roll Revision, Sets Dec. 2 Hearing

The case tests the legality of the EC’s Special Intensive Revision that opponents say risks disenfranchisement before Tamil Nadu’s 2026 election.

Overview

  • A bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi issued notice to the Election Commission and the Centre and listed the matter for hearing on December 2.
  • The petition by MDMK founder and former MP Vaiko challenges the Special Intensive Revision in Tamil Nadu, citing violations of Articles 14, 19, 21, 325 and 326 and provisions of the RPA 1950 and Registration of Electors Rules 1960.
  • DMK, CPI(M) and Vijay’s TVK have also moved the Supreme Court against the exercise, while the AIADMK has filed in support of it.
  • Earlier this month, the Supreme Court asked High Courts to keep related cases in abeyance, centralizing review of the challenges.
  • The EC announced a second phase of the SIR in October across 12 states and UTs including Tamil Nadu, drawing Opposition accusations that the exercise could be used to manipulate electoral rolls.
