Supreme Court Rejects Plea to Ban Non-Biodegradable Lawyer Bands

The bench ruled that regulation of legal dress waste is a task for administrators, not judges.

Overview

  • A two-judge bench led by Chief Justice Bhushan R Gavai with Justice K Vinod Chandran dismissed the petition on November 18.
  • The court cautioned against 'wardrobe policing,' asking whether it should next monitor citizens’ handkerchief use.
  • Petitioner Sakshi Vijay said she discovered a stash of discarded bands during Diwali cleaning and alleged they were not biodegradable.
  • Her plea named the Union Law Ministry and the Bar Council of India and sought a ban plus a nationwide system to collect, segregate and recycle used bands, including collection boxes in courts.
  • The bench said such issues lie with executive and municipal waste-management authorities and issued no directive to regulate or recycle lawyer bands.
