Supreme Court Reconstitutes Three-Member SIT and Bars NOIDA Approvals Without EIA

Empowering a forensic-backed probe team with an eight-week deadline, the court directed appointment of a chief vigilance officer to overhaul NOIDA’s governance.

Overview

  • The Supreme Court ordered a new three-member SIT led by an IPS officer of at least Commissioner rank, supported by forensic experts and the Economic Offences Wing.
  • The SIT must register preliminary enquiries immediately, proceed to file cases on finding prima facie cognizable offences, and secure prosecution sanctions within two weeks under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
  • The team has eight weeks to submit a status report, with its findings held by the court master until the next hearing.
  • No new NOIDA project can proceed without a full Environmental Impact Assessment and approval by the Supreme Court’s Green Bench.
  • The court directed the state to appoint a chief vigilance officer for NOIDA and establish a citizen advisory board within four weeks, and to place SIT findings before the UP Chief Secretary and Council of Ministers for action.
