Supreme Court Quashes 2011 Rape Case Against Tamil Director-Politician Seeman After Court-Recorded Settlement

The bench accepted reciprocal affidavits resolving the case, directing strict adherence to the undertakings.

Overview

  • A Supreme Court bench of Justices B.V. Nagarathna and R. Mahadevan on October 8 quashed the FIR after recording a settlement between the parties.
  • Seeman filed an affidavit tendering an unconditional apology, retracting his allegations against the actress, and undertaking not to contact her.
  • The complainant submitted an affidavit withdrawing her complaint and FIR, with the Court directing both sides to refrain from statements in media or on social media and to comply in letter and spirit.
  • Setting aside the Madras High Court’s earlier refusal to quash, the Court said the settlement was intended to give a quietus to all controversies and litigation between the parties.
  • The 2011 FIR alleged a 2007–2011 relationship on a false promise of marriage and invoked IPC Sections 417, 420, 354, 376, 506(1) and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, following earlier Supreme Court steps in March and September to facilitate a resolution.
