Overview

  • The court has directed the Ministry of External Affairs and Delhi Police to investigate whether officials at the Russian Embassy aided Victoria Basu’s disappearance with her five-year-old son.
  • Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi reaffirmed orders to seize Basu’s passport, issue look-out notices and notify all ports and airports to block any unauthorized departure.
  • Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati told the bench that checks at international airports and ports show neither Basu nor her child has legally left India.
  • The Russian Embassy in New Delhi has confirmed cooperation after Basu was last seen entering its consular section on July 5 with a diplomat.
  • The next hearing is set for July 21, when the Supreme Court will review a status report on the efforts to locate the mother-son duo and enforce the custody ruling.
