Supreme Court Panel Clears Tree Work for Barapullah Phase-III, Paving Way for Completion

Delhi’s PWD now plans supervised tree operations after reaching roughly 90% completion.

Overview

  • The Central Empowered Committee approved felling, transplantation and pruning along the alignment, removing the last environmental hurdle to finish the corridor.
  • Final count identifies 333 affected trees—155 in the central division and 178 in the south—with 85 to be felled, 87 transplanted and 161 lightly pruned.
  • Officials expect to complete the project in about six to twelve months, though tree operations may wait for Yamuna water levels to recede.
  • The 3.5‑km elevated link between Sarai Kale Khan and Mayur Vihar will provide three lanes each way, eight loops and dedicated cycle tracks and footpaths, integrating with NCRTC, Railways, ISBT and Metro hubs.
  • Approved in 2014, the project’s estimate has risen from ₹964 crore to about ₹1,330 crore, with anticipated gains including relief on NH‑24, the DND Flyway and Ring Road, faster east–south Delhi trips of around 20 minutes, and roughly two tonnes per day lower CO2 emissions.
