Supreme Court Orders Telangana to File Six-Week Restoration Plan for Kancha Gachibowli Forest

After accepting the halt of tree-felling, the bench demanded a holistic restoration blueprint balancing IT development with ecological safeguards.

Overview

  • Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi informed the court that all tree-felling at Kancha Gachibowli has been suspended as Telangana prepares its proposal.
  • Chief Justice B. R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran granted the state six weeks to submit a comprehensive plan and pledged to rescind adverse observations upon receipt of a credible, sustainable scheme.
  • The bench insisted that any development blueprint include compensatory and mitigating measures to protect wildlife, lakes and remaining vegetation.
  • Interim directives requiring the Central Empowered Committee to inspect the site and the Telangana Wildlife Warden to enforce protections remain in force until the plan is approved.
  • The court’s earlier warning that failure to restore the devastated forest could trigger contempt proceedings and personal liability for senior officials still stands.
