Supreme Court Orders Reddy’s Body Preserved Until High Court Hears ‘Fake Encounter’ Plea

The court acted after the son’s petition could not be heard urgently before the Puja recess.

Overview

  • Justices Dipankar Datta and Ujjal Bhuyan directed that Katha Ramchandra Reddy’s body not be cremated or buried until the Chhattisgarh High Court decides his son’s writ.
  • The bench requested the High Court to take up the case immediately after reopening, clarifying that no view has been taken on the merits.
  • Petitioner Raja Chandra alleges his father was tortured and killed in a staged encounter and seeks a fresh post-mortem and an independent probe, preferably by the CBI with officers from outside Chhattisgarh.
  • Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said a videographed post-mortem has already been conducted, one of the two bodies from the incident has been handed to family and cremated, and that several states had placed a bounty on Reddy.
  • Police say Reddy and Kadari Satyanarayana Reddy were killed in a September 22 encounter in Narayanpur during anti-Maoist operations, describing both as senior CPI (Maoist) figures.
