Overview

  • Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi reprimanded the SIT for “misdirecting itself” by probing beyond the two FIRs filed over Mahmudabad’s comments on Operation Sindoor.
  • The court ordered the investigation to remain confined to the language and content of those two FIRs and to conclude within four weeks.
  • It quashed any need to summon the professor again, noting his cooperation and quipping that investigators “need a dictionary” instead of his custody.
  • Bail conditions were relaxed to allow Mahmudabad to publish articles and express opinions on all topics except matters sub judice in his case.
  • The bench flagged the seizure of his electronic devices and questions about foreign trips as exceeding the SIT’s mandate.
