Supreme Court Issues Notice on Plea Against Sonam Wangchuk’s NSA Detention, Sets Oct. 14 Hearing

The case tests the government's use of preventive detention following deadly Ladakh protests.

Overview

  • Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria sought responses from the Centre, the Ladakh administration and Jodhpur jail on Gitanjali Angmo’s habeas petition.
  • Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said the grounds of detention were served on Wangchuk and that his lawyer and brother met him in prison.
  • Kapil Sibal argued the family has not received the detention grounds and pressed for access, with the court noting the SG would examine providing a copy to the wife.
  • The bench recorded that medical attention must be provided as required under prison rules and gave no immediate relief on other requests.
  • Wangchuk was detained on Sept. 26 under the NSA after Sept. 24 violence in Leh that left four dead; he is lodged in Jodhpur, and an associated NGO’s FCRA licence has been cancelled.
