Supreme Court Intervenes in Calcutta High Court Conflict

Justice Gangopadhyay accuses colleague of political bias, leading to Supreme Court stay on all proceedings.

The Supreme Court has taken suo moto cognizance of a conflict between Calcutta High Court Judge Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay and a division bench presided over by Justice Soumen Sen.
Justice Gangopadhyay accused Justice Sen of working for a political party, after Sen stayed Gangopadhyay's order for a CBI probe into allegations of fake caste certificates being issued in Bengal.
Justice Gangopadhyay ignored the Division Bench's order and asked for a relook by the Supreme Court into the orders passed by Justice Sen.
The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the state of West Bengal and stayed all further proceedings before the Calcutta High Court.
A five-judge constitution bench led by Chief Justice CJI DY Chandrachud will now take up the matter in a special hearing.
