Supreme Court Flags Flood of Filings in Stray Dogs Case, Schedules Special Bench Hearing

The court has set a special three-judge hearing for January 7 to take up all connected pleas.

Overview

  • Justice Sandeep Mehta remarked that the number of applications in the matter is unusually high, saying such volumes do not usually arise even in human cases.
  • A three-judge bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and N V Anjaria will hear the suo motu case on Wednesday, January 7.
  • The court said it will take up all connected matters together, including fresh interlocutory applications and transfer petitions.
  • In earlier orders on November 7, the court directed authorities to relocate stray dogs from schools, hospitals and railway stations after sterilisation and vaccination, not to return them to those spots, and to remove cattle and other strays from highways.
  • The November directions conflict with the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023, which require returning sterilised dogs to their original territory, prompting legal challenges and recent public protests.
