Overview

  • A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and A G Masih granted the short extension on the day Yadav’s bail was set to lapse.
  • The Supreme Court said the Delhi High Court lacked jurisdiction to extend relief granted by the top court and indicated the matter should go to Justice M M Sundresh’s bench.
  • Yadav sought additional time citing a September 5 wedding and the need to arrange a Rs 54 lakh fine imposed at sentencing.
  • He has served more than 23 years of a 25-year term without remission for the 2002 murder of Nitish Katara.
  • The Delhi High Court earlier listed his plea for September 2 after issuing notices as the victim’s mother opposed further interim relief, and co-convict Sukhdev Yadav was released in July after completing a 20-year fixed term.
