Supreme Court Expands Notices in PIL Targeting Online Betting Apps

Regulators, tech platforms, state governments have been asked to respond before an August 18 hearing that could impose interim curbs on celebrity endorsements of betting apps.

Overview

  • A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi issued notices to the RBI, Enforcement Directorate, TRAI and all state governments in response to Dr K A Paul’s PIL seeking a nationwide ban or stricter regulation of online betting apps.
  • The court also directed Google India, Apple India and major gaming platforms including Dream11, Mobile Premier League and A23 Games to file responses on their roles in distributing unregulated betting services.
  • The petition cites at least 24 suicides in Telangana linked to gambling debts and highlights FIRs registered against 25 celebrities for promoting betting applications.
