Supreme Court Directs Fresh Protection and Demolition of Encroachments at Lodhi-Era Gumti of Shaikh Ali

A detailed conservation blueprint is due at the July 23 hearing following the court’s mandate to correct the protection notification.

  • A bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Ahsanuddin Amanullah ordered the Delhi government to reissue a correctly worded notification under the AMASR Act declaring the Gumti of Shaikh Ali a protected monument

  • The Defence Colony Residents’ Welfare Association must vacate its six-decade-long occupation of the Gumti and pay ₹40 lakh in compensation to the Delhi government’s archaeology department
  • Authorities have been directed to submit a comprehensive restoration and beautification plan detailing timelines and utility provisions by the next hearing on July 23
