Supreme Court Defers Sahara–Adani Property Sale Plea for Six Weeks, Seeks Government Response

The pause follows an amicus report flagging undisclosed claims over the assets.

  • A bench led by Chief Justice B. R. Gavai granted the Centre more time and impleaded the Ministry of Cooperation, listing the matter after six weeks.
  • Amicus curiae Shekhar Naphade told the court he has received at least 34 claims on properties Sahara seeks to sell and urged public disclosure or newspaper notices to invite objections.
  • Naphade’s report says many assets are encumbered or disputed, including 63 properties under Income-Tax attachment, Enforcement Directorate actions on some, unclear titles for dozens, and third-party claims on key sites such as Aamby Valley and Lucknow projects.
  • The court also adjourned Sahara employees’ pleas for payment of pending salaries and directed Sahara and the amicus to verify and examine the claims before the next hearing.
  • Sahara seeks leave to sell 88 properties to Adani Properties under a September 6 term sheet to raise funds for investor refunds, stating about ₹16,000 crore of the ₹24,030 crore principal has been deposited in the SEBISahara Refund Account.
