Supreme Court Consultation Puts Girl Safety at the Center of Digital Governance

Senior judges urged specialised laws and training to tackle online exploitation, guided by a newly released child-rights handbook.

Overview

  • Chief Justice B. R. Gavai said protecting the girl child must be a core priority of digital governance and that technology should serve liberation rather than exploitation.
  • He warned that threats now span online harassment, cyberbullying, digital stalking, misuse of personal data, and deepfake imagery, calling for enforcement, education and awareness to match the laws.
  • Justice B. V. Nagarathna pressed for trauma‑informed, child‑sensitive procedures in courts and police stations, citing marginal gains in the 0–6 child sex ratio (914 to 929) and high anaemia among girls aged 15–19 (~59%).
  • Justice J. B. Pardiwala released the Supreme Court’s Handbook on Child Rights and later cautioned that current investigative methods are not equipped for complex cybercrimes, urging stronger safeguards and capacity building.
  • The two‑day consultation in New Delhi, organised by the Supreme Court’s Juvenile Justice Committee with UNICEF India, seeks to move these judicial recommendations into executive action, public awareness campaigns and targeted training.
