Overview
- The Supreme Court Collegium issued a resolution on May 27, 2026, formally recommending five persons for elevation to the apex court following meetings on May 22 and May 27.
- The five names are Chief Justices Sheel Nagu (Punjab & Haryana), Shree Chandrashekhar (Bombay), Sanjeev Sachdeva (Madhya Pradesh), Arun Palli (Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh) and senior advocate V. Mohana.
- The inclusion of V. Mohana is notable because, if appointed, she would become the second woman on the Supreme Court bench where Justice B. V. Nagarathna is currently the only woman judge.
- The Collegium’s recommendations have been transmitted to the Union government and must receive the Centre’s concurrence and presidential warrants to take effect, a step that would increase the court’s working strength if approved.
- The move follows the government’s mid-May ordinance to raise the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court and comes as case pendency has climbed above 92,000 and several justices are due to retire in the coming months, creating urgency to shore up the bench.
