Overview
- The five-member panel led by Chief Justice B. R. Gavai named Bombay High Court Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Patna High Court Chief Justice Vipul M. Pancholi in a resolution posted on the Supreme Court website.
- The court currently has 32 judges against a sanctioned 34, so the two appointments would fill existing vacancies if notified by the Centre and the President.
- Justice Aradhe’s parent high court is Madhya Pradesh, with earlier service in Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka and Telangana before taking charge in Bombay in January 2025.
- Justice Pancholi’s parent high court is Gujarat, he moved to Patna in 2023 and became its chief justice in July 2025, and reports project him to be CJI around October 2031 if elevated now.
- The collegium also proposed transfers of 14 high court judges, including two from the Delhi High Court, as part of a broader administrative reshuffle.
