Supreme Court Closes Vantara PILs After SIT Finds No Legal Violations

A court-appointed inquiry reported complete regulatory compliance across animal acquisitions, wildlife trade, finance, leading the bench to bar repeat complaints.

Overview

  • The bench accepted the SIT’s report, dismissed the petitions and directed that no judicial, statutory or administrative forum entertain proceedings on the same allegations.
  • The full report and annexures were re-sealed, an exhaustive summary was made part of the public order, and a complete copy was given to Vantara under a confidentiality undertaking.
  • The SIT found no violations of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, CZA rules, Customs law, FEMA, PMLA or CITES, with all imports documented through multi-layered permits.
  • Animal husbandry, veterinary care and welfare practices at the Jamnagar facility were deemed to meet or exceed national and international benchmarks, including Global Humane certification.
  • Authorities were told to consider the SIT’s recommendations, and Vantara was allowed to pursue remedies against misinformation or defamatory publications.
