Supreme Court Closes Contempt Case After Apology, Warns Lawyers Over ‘Scandalous’ Pleadings

The bench closed the matter after the High Court judge accepted an unconditional apology.

Overview

  • A bench of CJI BR Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran on November 10 disposed of the suo motu criminal contempt proceedings.
  • The case stemmed from a transfer petition that contained scurrilous allegations against Telangana High Court judge Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya.
  • The contemnors were N Peddi Raju and advocates Ritesh Patil and Nitin Meshram, who were told on August 11 to apologise; Justice Bhattacharya accepted their apologies on August 22 and placed a rebuttal on record.
  • Recording closure, the Court decried a growing trend of litigants attacking judges after unfavourable orders and said the majesty of law can lie in forgiveness when apologies are made.
  • The petition had alleged bias in a matter linked to relief granted to Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy under the SC/ST Act, though the contempt ruling addressed conduct in pleadings rather than case merits.
