Overview

• The bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi recorded that there is no impediment to appointments at Calcutta University, Biswa Bangla Biswabidyalaya, Sadhu Ram Chand Murmu University of Jhargram, Gour Banga University, Kazi Nazrul University, Jadavpur University, Raiganj University, and North Bengal University.
• As to the remaining universities without consensus, the court said those cases will be taken up in chamber, with the matter continuing in State of West Bengal v. Dr. Sanat Kumar Ghosh & Ors., SLP (C) No. 17403 of 2023.
• The approvals are based on recommendations from an independent search-cum-selection committee led by former Chief Justice U. U. Lalit.
• The court discouraged discussion of individual candidates in open proceedings and indicated the State should concur where the Chancellor has accepted the panel’s recommendations.
• The step comes after prolonged vacancies and interim arrangements driven by a Governor–state standoff, and officials said Raj Bhavan would notify the names before the State completes the appointment process.
