Overview

  • The Supreme Court ordered cessation of all Madhya Pradesh High Court proceedings on Vijay Shah’s comments and maintained its interim protection against his arrest.
  • Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the bench that the SIT has seized devices, prepared a transcript of Shah’s speech, and recorded multiple witness statements following its May 21 visit to Raikunda.
  • The three-member Special Investigation Team, headed by an IGP and including two IPS officers, was formed on May 19 to probe the FIR filed under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections for promoting enmity and hatred.
  • Shah’s apology for referring to Colonel Sofiya Qureshi as a ‘sister of terrorists’ was rejected by the Supreme Court, which branded his remarks ‘crass’ and ‘shameful’.
  • The apex court has set the next hearing for the second week of July to review the SIT’s forthcoming status report and decide subsequent steps.
