Supreme Court Appoints SIT for Fact-Finding Probe Into Reliance Foundation’s Vantara

The bench cast the move as a neutral inquiry to verify contested claims raised in thinly sourced petitions.

The Supreme Court said the order only sought a fact-finding inquiry to ascertain the true factual position to enable the court to pass further orders
Vantara is spread over 3000 acres within the Green Belt of Reliance's Jamnagar Refinery Complex in Gujarat. It aims to be one of the leading contributors to conservation efforts globally.

Overview

  • Retired Justice J. Chelameswar will lead the four-member SIT with Justice Raghavendra Chauhan, ex-Mumbai police chief Hemant Nagrale and customs officer Anish Gupta.
  • The team will examine animal acquisitions, especially elephants, compliance with the Wildlife (Protection) Act and CITES, import rules, welfare standards and mortality records.
  • The mandate also covers alleged wildlife smuggling, creation of a private collection, environmental concerns near an industrial zone and possible financial irregularities including money laundering.
  • The SIT must conduct a physical inspection of the Jamnagar facility, begin immediately and submit its report by September 12, with the matter listed on September 15.
  • The court directed central and Gujarat authorities to fully assist and noted that non-cooperation could invite contempt, as Vantara publicly pledged full cooperation.
