Supreme Court Advances AI Tools While Insisting Judges Keep Final Say

The move aims to widen court access through translation, chatbots, data integration because judges must remain the final decision-makers.

Overview

  • Chief Justice Surya Kant reiterated Thursday in Samarkand that the Supreme Court will roll out AI-enabled services to ease access to justice while keeping human judges in control of rulings.
  • The court’s AI Committee published draft regulations in June 2026 that enshrine the principle of ‘human primacy’ and call for rules to govern how algorithms are used in courts.
  • Operational tools include SUVAS, which has produced more than 83,000 translations of judgments into 18 Indian languages, and Su-Sahayak, a website chatbot that gives users case status, cause lists and e-service guidance.
  • The ‘One Case, One Data’ initiative seeks to integrate case records across court levels so documents need not be repeatedly summoned, which the court says will cut duplication and speed hearings.
  • The court warns that digitisation can exclude vulnerable people and raise data security and algorithmic-accountability risks, so it is pairing deployments with safeguards and cross-jurisdictional cooperation.
