Supercell Hailstorms Bury Parts of La Pampa and Northwest Buenos Aires in Ice

Meteorologists warn new cells could redevelop through Saturday under an orange alert.

Overview

  • Early Saturday storms left ice accumulations reported up to about 50 cm, inundating neighborhoods and damaging homes in Santa Rosa and other communities.
  • Very large hailstones, in some reports near tennis-ball size, collapsed gutters and pipes, with rare backflows captured in local videos.
  • The outbreak around 5:30 a.m. also hit General Villegas, Trenque Lauquen and nearby districts, with about 60 mm of rain reported in Jagüel del Monte.
  • Jeremías Baraldi attributed the event to supercells and cautioned that new cells may recur frequently, with the regional orange alert remaining in effect.
  • A separate Friday afternoon hailburst in Progreso produced minor roof and branch damage, intermittent power outages and no reported injuries as crews cleared drains.
