Super Typhoon Ragasa Makes Landfall in China’s Guangdong After Deadly Taiwan Floods

The storm came ashore in Yangjiang after authorities prepared Guangdong with sweeping evacuations and shutdowns.

Overview

  • At least 14 people were confirmed dead in Taiwan’s Hualien after a barrier lake on the Matai’an stream failed and inundated Guangfu, with search teams continuing door-to-door operations and reports of more than 100 people unaccounted for in some tallies.
  • Guangdong reported large-scale precautions before landfall, including roughly 1.89 million evacuations across the province and the closure of schools, work, production and many transport services, with Yangjiang’s Hailing Island cited as the landfall point.
  • Hong Kong raised its highest hurricane signal No. 10 as Ragasa approached, suspending most transport, closing schools and warning of storm surges that the observatory said could reach several meters in some locations.
  • Air travel faced major disruption, with Hong Kong’s airport operating with significant delays and hundreds of cancellations expected, including about 500 flights from Cathay, while regional rail services in Guangdong paused operations.
  • Ragasa earlier swept the northern Philippines and southern Taiwan with torrential rain and winds reported near 195 km/h south of Hong Kong, with Macau also issuing its top alert as coastal cities braced for destructive gusts and flooding.
