Sunrun and BGE Operate First U.S. Residential Vehicle-to-Grid Power Plant

Three Maryland households are exporting evening power from Ford F-150 Lightnings via Sunrun’s Home Integration System.

Overview

  • The seasonal pilot has dispatched energy on weekdays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. since July and runs through the end of September.
  • Participants receive payments based on the energy they share, with compensation capped at $1,000 for the season.
  • Sunrun administers the program using the co-developed Ford Home Integration System, the first commercially available bidirectional setup in the U.S., with three customers enrolled.
  • The collaboration progressed from vehicle-to-home capability launched last summer to grid export this summer to supply capacity during peak demand.
  • Leaders from Sunrun, BGE, and Ford say the trial shows EV batteries can bolster grid reliability and provide homeowner income, with a Baltimore participant reporting earnings from sending power to the grid.
