Sunrun and BGE Activate First U.S. Residential Vehicle-to-Grid Power Plant Using Ford F-150 Lightning

The pilot pays Ford F-150 Lightning owners to export evening power, testing residential bidirectional charging for grid support.

Overview

  • Three Baltimore-area households enrolled since July have been dispatching energy to the grid on weekdays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. using Ford and Sunrun’s Home Integration System.
  • Participants are compensated based on energy shared, with payments capped at $1,000 for the dispatch season that runs through the end of September.
  • Sunrun administers the program with BGE, advancing from last summer’s vehicle-to-home capability to utility-controlled vehicle-to-grid operations this summer.
  • Executives from Sunrun, Ford, and BGE say the effort demonstrates EV batteries’ potential to help meet peak demand, bolster reliability, and create customer income opportunities.
  • The small-scale pilot, described as the nation’s first residential V2G distributed power plant, is positioned as a step toward broader deployment as hardware availability and market rules evolve.
